John Cleese

John Cleese

Best known for his idiosyncratic turns in Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers, John Cleese will once again bring his unique comedy perspective to audiences across South Africa. Cleese has done it all, and now it’s time for him to tell you about his jam-packed life. The show will be split into two halves. The first will be a conversation session hosted by local radio celebrity John Maytham from 567 CapeTalk, who will be chatting to John Cleese in more detail about life up to and including his Monty Python career. And, the second half will be John talking about Fawlty Towers, A Fish Called Wanda and other controversial and hilarious matters as well as answering questions from the audience.

Cleese has achieved a lot in his career, which started as a sketch writer for BBC Radio’s Dick Emery Show and then The Frost Report. After this stardom beckoned, and Monty Python was created, with Cleese co-writing and starring in four series and three films. He went on to achieve further great success as the neurotic hotel manager Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, which he co-wrote with his then wife Connie Booth. After huge UK success John went on to crack the USA with A Fish Called Wanda (which he wrote and starred in with Jamie Lee Curtis). The late 1990s saw the unstoppable Mr Cleese appear in the James Bond movie The World is not Enough and later Die Another Day. His latest film role was none other than the ‘The Guv’ in the popular South African film ‘Spud’. From writing to starring in plays, musicals, theatrical and comedy productions, to films and sitcoms,

Leon Schuster’s Mad Buddies takes in R4.5 million (Gross) in its opening weekend in SA

Leon Schuster’s latest box office release, Mad Buddies, has been well received by local audiences, taking in a staggering R4.5 million (Gross) in its opening weekend (Friday 22 June – Sunday 24 June).

The result makes Mad Buddies the biggest ever 3-day opening weekend for a Schuster film, beating the likes of Mr Bones 1 and 2, Mama Jack and 2010’s smash hit Schuk’s Tshalabala’s Survival Guide to South Africa over the Friday to Sunday opening weekend period.

Mad Buddies, the 14th outing from the legendary filmmaker, tells the story of sworn enemies, Boetie (Schuster) and Beast, played by Kenneth Nkosi (Jerusalema, Tsotsi, White Wedding), who are forced to embark on a road trip as unwitting subjects of a new TV reality show, devised by a gorgeous TV Producer, Kelsey, played by Tanit Phoenix (Spud,Straight Outta Benoni). On camera, with the whole of South Africa in on the joke, the pair comes unstuck at every stage of this hilarious journey until they discover that they have been conned and join forces to exact revenge.

Mad Buddies also stars long-time Schuster collaborator Alfred Ntombela as Mr Mda, the Minister of Tourism, is Directed by Gray Hofmeyr and Produced by Helena Spring. It is currently available in cinema’s nationwide.

We’re Never Going To Be (SA Idols). The song pokes fun at the competition

The Brothers Streep Launch New Idols Single

Sunday 5th June saw the launch of the new Brothers Streep single, We’re Never Going To Be (SA Idols). The song pokes fun at the competition, whilst referencing past and present Idols icons such as Gareth Cliff, Proverb, Randall Abrahams, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Unathi Msengana and Heinz Winkler.

The song came about after the Idols producers contacted the Brothers and asked them to write a song for the new season of Idols.

“We’d just got back from having written and performed a song for The Comics Choice Awards up in Joburg, and Idols called us saying they’d watched our song about Anna Paquin on the Graham Norton Show, and wanted to know if we’d write a song for them. Idols is probably one of South Africa’s biggest locally produced TV shows – it was a pretty easy call to make,” says singer and guitarist Simon van Wyk.

The single is currently available for free download off The Brothers Streep website, www.brothersstreep.com.

“We’re hoping that making the song available for free will make it easier for the song to get around. All we ask is for people who download the single to consider sharing the link with others and maybe even request their favourite radio station to play it – that would be nice,” says singer and guitarist Dylan Hichens. “The song laments ‘we’ll never have a single charting in the Top 40’ – we’re holding thumbs that lyric will become ironic.”

Idols and The Brothers Streep came up with quite a unique way to present the song.

“Idols asked us to perform the song live to the judges as if it were a real audition, so the judges didn’t really see it coming, and we didn’t really know exactly what to expect. Standing in front of someone and singing that they look like Voldemort isn’t necessarily the best way to make a good first impression on them,” says van Wyk.

“We realised that carting in full band equipment wasn’t going to be possible, so we decided we’d just blatantly mime the song and hope it adds to the comedy,” says Hichens. “Actual pop stars mime all the time, if anything, it was the most professional thing we could have done.”

A music video for the single is on the horizon, and the Brothers have already had further song writing requests, penning the soundtrack to an upcoming advert for Geely which you can look out for later this month.

Platinum-selling comedian Jeff Dunham to tour SA in September!

Platinum-selling comedian Jeff Dunham to tour SA in September!

Jeff Dunham, best known for his ventriloquist character `Achmed the Dead Terrorist` has won over millions of fans with characters that are politically incorrect, insulting, and downright hilarious. Witness why Jeff Dunham is the top-grossing stand up act in North America, when he tours South Africa in September.

TOUR DATES

Saturday 18th September – Sun City Superbowl

Thursday 23rd September – CarnivalCity, Johannesburg

Friday 24th September – Grand West Casino, Cape Town

PRESS RELEASE

Jeff Dunham is known around the world for the YouTube-hit “Achmed the dead terrorist” (over 200 million views on YouTube)

Jeff Dunham is one of the funniest partners in show business. He has amassed legions of loyal fans throughout the United States and abroad with thousands of sold-out theater and comedy club performances, countless television guest spots – including numerous Tonight Show appearances with both Leno and Carson– and with two top-rated specials on Comedy Central.

He continues to win great accolades and success for one simple reason: He and his buddies are funny as hell. Oh, and by the way… Jeff Dunham is a ventriloquist.

Dunham’s comedic skill, impeccable technique, and sleight of hand make him a master of his craft. In fact, audiences often forget there is a person behind the puppets. “What makes this performer the best at what he does is the believability factor,” one reviewer wrote. “Dunham’s characters have more personality than a lot of people I know.” Dunham was also voted “Funniest Male Stand-Up Comic”’ at the American Comedy Awards, an honour shared with the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Foxworthy, and Robin Williams.

Sony Music is the official supplier in South Africa of Jeff’s two recently released platinum-selling DVDs: “Spark of Insanity” and “Very Special Christmas Special”. And as an added bonus, Sony Music has also released a Limited Edition Boxset that contains both DVDs. This boxset will only be available while stocks last!

Barry will be hosting The Comedy Collection’s star studded line-up – wed 10 march

Barry Varkel worked successfully as MD of his own law firm for over ten years, before going off the rails and facing a tough life choice: either emulating the Ernest Hemingway wall-head-12 gauge shotgun manoeuvre, or taking an extended sabbatical abroad. His wife Chrissie begged him to get his gun licence and get on with the job, but he felt there was still a glimmer of opportunity remaining in being able to unleash considerable havoc upon his return into mainstream Cape Town society.

Back now in Cape Town after his world trip, unemployed and looking to do anything legal for cash (except for working in the wanker industry of advertising), you can catch him performing his new found love, which he’s pretty useless at, stand up comedy.

Barry will be hosting The Comedy Collection’s star studded line-up of deadbeat amateur Cape Town comic performers this Wednesday 10 March 2010 at Ragazzi, 1st floor, 33 Long Street, starting at 8.30pm.

Catch all the action or don’t. Either way you’ll be missing out on nothing!
