SIPHO “Hotstix” Mabuse, at 60, became a mischievous schoolboy for just a moment last week. Driving to school, a block from the gate, he opened the window, put his arm out, and shouted “Hey!” to a group of 20-somethings. With a big grin, he gesticulated to his watch, implying that they were going to be late for class. – Lucille Davie

Local singer Jacques Terre’Blanche has collaborated with music legend Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse on his new single ‘Goodnight Moon’. The song, written by Will Kimbrook and Gwil Owen, features Mabuse on saxophone and is produced by former Mean Mr Mustard front-man Mark Beling. The melodic ballad contains elements of electronic production layered with acoustic guitar and saxophone and showcases the vocal capabilities that have earned Jacques immense respect within the South African music industry for the last decade.
“We came across the track late last year and I felt it immediately, especially considering it fits in with the direction I am taking with my music this year – a focus on strong melodies and vocals,” said Jacques, who came third in Idols season two back in 2003. “We met with Sipho who agreed to play on the single and it is an absolute honour to have worked with a gentleman and a professional who is one of South Africa’s musical icons.”
Mabuse recently celebrated 5 decades in the local music industry and his single ‘Burnout’ sold in excess of 500,000 copies in South Africa alone in 1984.
Terre’Blanche and Beling joined forces on the 2007 SAMA nominated album ‘The Colour Red’ and 2010 hit single ‘Do For Love’. Singles such as ‘Natural Born Hustler’, ‘The Heist’ and ‘I Won’t Forget’ have earned Jacques the accolade of one of the country’s finest vocalists and celebrated personalities in entertainment circles.
“Mark and I have a professional understanding where we completely get where we are both going and there is a mutual respect that clearly shows itself in the quality and success of the songs we do together,” continued Terre’Blanche.
‘Goodnight Moon‘ will be available for download on online music platforms in April 2012.
About Jacques Terre’Blanche
SAMA nominated performing artist Jacques Terre’Blanche first became a household name as the blonde “surfer boy” hunk who wowed female fans with his smooth vocals during Idols in 2003. Proving that he was way more than a pretty face, Jacques became a firm favourite in the competition and was placed an esteemed third place. Idols, however, was not the first time that this singing sensation made the discovery that he could hold a note. Jacques began voice training at the age of 15 and completed his Grade 8 in Royal Music Examinations by the time he had finished school. He then went on to the University of Cape Town to read Classical Music and Jazz and majored in voice as his instrument of choice.
Jacques’ first album was EQ (2004, Sony Music) and was produced and recorded by Dave Thompson. The jazz-flavoured album boasted the SAMA nominated track Endlessly and also a recorded version of Jacques’ introductory song to the Idols competition, Brother Can You Spare Me A Dime, which is still a firm favourite amongst his fans, especially when performed at his live gigs. That same year, Jacques won a Crystal Award in the category ‘Best Male Newcomer – Music, Stage and Screen’.
The follow-up to EQ was the SAMA nominated pop album The Colour Red (2008, Gallo Music) which contained no fewer than 5 chart-topping hits including collaborations with the likes of Pebbles and international R&B mega-star Akon. Songs such as I Won’t Forget, Natural Born Hustla, The Heist and Set Me Free can still be heard on radio and their timeless feel firmly anchored Jacques as one of South Africa’s leading male artists, a position which he firmly holds on to today. 2010 and 2011 have seen Jacques release two very successful singles, one being a reworked version of Do For Love where he collaborated with Block & Crown, and a duet with Jackie Jackson, the late Michael Jackson’s brother, on We Know What’s Going On. This track features a haunting spoken verse by the king of pop himself. Not many South African artists, if any, can say that they have featured Akon and Michael Jackson in their repertoire! Jacques’ most recent single Hot Teasing, produced by Mark Beling of Mean Mr Mustard fame, is currently gracing our airwaves across the country. 2012 will see Jacques embark on a new direction and new album that is stripped down to basics and will focus on his incredible vocal capabilities and will contain elements of new-age swing and jazz. Goodnight Moon, the first single, in which he will be collaborating with Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, will be recorded and released in early 2012.
Aside from a career in recording, Jacques has taken part in a number of stage productions including Swing Sisters with Loyiso Bala, Bianca Le Grange and Gloria Bosman; Debbie Does Dallas alongside Caprice and Tanya Van Graan as well as a the role of the late Andy Gibb in a Bee Gees tribute show. He also appeared as a guest on the annual pantomime of Pinnochio. Blessed with incredibly good looks that make females (and some males) weak at the knees, Jacques was voted third in the top 12 Cosmo Men 2008 and has appeared in many publications, centre folds and calendars. More recently he appeared in the South African version of Survivor, where his strength and endurance were put to the test in front of millions of viewers. Music is his one passion, but anything to do with outdoors, sport and fitness is his other love. Highly competitive by nature, Jacques can be seen participating in table tennis, swimming, gym and recently became an ambassador for Urban Fitness Outdoors, a bootcamp-style group fitness class. He was awarded his Springbok colours for gymnastics as a teenager and an unfortunate injury forced him to retire just as he was in training for the 2004 Olympic Games. Jacques has an incredible sense of humour, is focused and driven by his passion for music and his love for his friends, family and, of course, his wife Charné Jade.
