Who will the Sharks pick at 10 for their Super 15 opener against the Cheetahs on February 19? Will it be Currie Cup star Patrick Lambie or former Bulls and Cheetahs flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter?

ThIS is one of the more intriguing selection posers for the Sharks coaching staff ahead of the new season with the famine of the 2010 Super 14 having given way to a feast in the vital position. Meyer Bosman, another off-season recruit, has played flyhalf for the Springboks, although he regards himself now primarily as an inside centre.

“It is an interesting one,” smiled coach John Plumtree. “When we contracted Jacques-Louis last year Patrick had not started playing flyhalf for us yet and then came through really strongly in the Currie Cup. The most important thing is that the squad is better off with us having good depth in a key position.”

Plumtree said that the catch 22 for him is that Potgieter has Super rugby experience at flyhalf while young Lambie is experienced in the new game plan the Sharks pioneered in the Currie Cup.

“If you ask me if Pat is a 10 I would say ‘yes’, and the same goes for Jacques-Louis. We moved Pat closer and closer to the ball in the Currie Cup (15, to 12, to 10) and he excelled in each position and was very comfortable at 10, but he also knows that the Super 15 will be much quicker and he will have less time. He knows it will be another step up in terms of pressure,” the coach said.

“Jacques-Louis has already played flyhalf at this level and we feel we can improve his game as well. At the Bulls he was not able to force himself into a regular starting spot because of Morne Steyn, but we feel he will have more opportunity here. It is a very long and tough competition and both of these guys can play more than one position.”

Both players will get an opportunity to start at flyhalf in the Neo Africa series in Cape Town at the beginning of February. The Sharks will play the Lions and the Stormers in the triangular series.
