Bezuidenhout to join DHL Stormers on loan

Bezuidenhout to join DHL Stormers on loan

Lions hooker Martin Bezuidenhout will join the DHL Stormers at the start of next week, as injury cover up front.

With youngster Scarra Ntubeni (shoulder) having undergone surgery this week and Springbok Tiaan Liebenberg (back) still a few weeks away from taking contact, Bezuidenhout will be based in Cape Town until the end of March.

DHL Stormers coach Allister Coetzee explained: “Martin will initially be here until the end of March, but it could be longer – depending on the fitness of Tiaan and Scarra.”

Bezuidenhout played his Craven Week rugby for the Leopards, before moving to Johannesburg after school.

The 23-year-old hooker has represented the Lions at every level – including two seasons of Super Rugby and the 2011 Currie Cup Final when he came off the bench.

“As I said earlier this week, we needed a hooker with enough Super Rugby and big-game experience and Martin certainly fits the bill,” said Coetzee.

“He also came very highly-recommended by his peers and we’re looking forward to welcoming him at training on Monday and getting him up to speed with our systems at the HPC.”

Bezuidenhout will immediately be included in the team’s preparations for next Saturday’s warm-up match against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein (kick-off 17h00).

Beyond the Wall Music presents ‘Life-Spoken’ with Heinrich Frans – Live on 24 February 2013.

Beyond the Wall Music presents ‘Life-Spoken’ – Live. on 24th Feb 2013

Heinrich will be performing original music off my debut EP, ‘Life-Stories’ (available on iTunes and other digital distribution platforms worldwide as of 24 February 2013) and forthcoming full-length debut album.

In this performance and intimate setting, I will take you on a musical journey that will include material that has shaped me into the multi-faceted singer and songwriter that I am today.

With musical experiences within the classical, jazz, R&B, soul and gospel spheres and participation as a choir-member, soloist and backing vocalist with internationally renowned choirs, orchestras and recording artists, in many ways, this will be a ‘full-circle’ moment for me.

Heinrich will be accompanied by a seasoned set of musicians namely, Shaun Johannes (Musical Director and Acoustic and Electric Bass), Mark Goliath (Keyboard), Kevin Gibson (Drums) and featured guests.

This ‘one night only’ performance is set to deliver a unique and soulful experience.

Bookings are now officially open via Computicket. Book now to avoid disappointment.

JAZZ: African Nations Cup, tributes | Arts & Entertainment | BDlive

ONE interesting aspect of the African Nations Cup is how it profiles not only South African sport, but our culture, via its opening and closing ceremonies. Though torrential rain truncated Saturday’s opening, we saw enough to raise sharp questions about choices made in 2010, which shoved South African sounds to the margins.

Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse has been heating up rain-sodden stadium shows since his teens.

He did it again on Saturday with Shikiza: an old song but a very good one that had the whole crowd dancing, rainstorms or no. Perhaps they simply wrote more infectious songs back in the 1980s; more likely, the song had a greater effect in contrast to the formulaic flaccidity of the composed-by-the-yard corporate muzak that surrounded it.

On the Couch is 10 years old this year on Heart 104.9fm

Take Tapfuma Makina and Heart 104.9FM on a Saturday morning. Add Martin Myers and someone known only as Flapper and you have On The Couch, a witty and crazy sports-themed show.

What started as merely a three-minute good idea over 10 years ago has grown into an hour of laughs, non-facts and food for thought.

Initiated by Myers and then Saturday on-air DJ the late Az Abrahams back in 2003, Heart 104.9 soon realised that there was such a thing as power in numbers, and Flapper joined the team.

On the Couch

On the Couch

Today the passionate and sports mad trio — an accountant, a music industry veteran and a music DJ — make for fun radio.

From just after 8am through to 9.am the phone lines light up and Heart listeners get to tackle the fanatical Flapper, referee Tapfuma and the ever-controversial Martin on everything from try-lines to transformation.

Tapfuma is soccer and Arsenal mad, Myers follows suit with his unashamed love of the All Blacks, whilst Flapper can’t be challenged on his cricket and golf knowledge.

Everything about On The Couch is entirely off the cuff and therein lies its spontaneity and in turn its success. With Tapfuma keeping the lines open throughout the show and a little bit of music to dilute the talk, the subject matter is relevant to the sports issues of the day — a mixture of good clean fun and addressing controversial issues.

With international sport well covered, these three wise men are hungry to expose and celebrate the best of what the country has to offer in up-and-coming talent and teams, no matter what the sport or discipline.

The trio don’t play by the rules, only because they spend more time on the bench than on the field, making On The Couch everything but formatted — instead it’s fun, entertaining and downright silly at times.
