CTL winners enjoy Bling-Bling Tour show | Cape Town Lately

Cape Town Lately competition winners Bernice Harman and Adrian Phipps had a blast at the Bling-Bling Comedy Tour show at GrandWest on Friday night.

Bernice Harman and Adrian Phipps won a pair of tickets to the Bling-Bling Comedy Tour via Cape Town Lately’s Facebook competition.

Here’s what they had to saw after the show.

Bernice Harman:

‘If you love comedy and you love South African culture, you’d love the show! The Bling-Bling Tour show was an entertaining evening with celebrities in the audience.

‘David Kau rocked the stage. He’s now in my list of top ten favourite performers as he had a great stage presence. I Thoroughly enjoyed Jason Goliath as his confidence keeps your eyes glued on him, listening to his every word. Skhumba’s act was excellent too.

‘Kudos to all the comedians for entertaining us with the intricate details of our politics, which borders on being ludicrous at times!

‘And special thanks to Cape Town Lately for the great evening. I’m a big fan. If you love Cape Town, you have to check them out.’

Adrian Phipps:

‘I was genuinely amped to hear I had won tickets to the Bling-Bling Tour show as I have heard only good things about in the media and I was not disappointed at all. The show exceeded my expectations and the line-up was world class as it included good mix of established comedians with some up-and-comers.

My favorite act was Conrad Koch and Chester Missing. This oke has his finger on the pulse of South African politics and has no qualms about laying the truth out there. His quick-fire form of comedy is also something I enjoy.

A special shout-out to David Kau as the host as this dude has grown from a junior shock-type comedian to a rock solid mainstay of South African comedy. I’ call him the black Barry Hilton. On Friday night, he was definitely in his element running the show.

‘I would like to thank Cape Town Lately for the opportunity and hope they stay committed to all things Cape Town. It’s great to see people who are as passionate about this lovely city as I am.’

The prize was proudly sponsored by Triple M Entertainment.

South African comedy legend returns to the big screen this November

Johannesburg, 9 July 2013; SA’s favourite prankster, Leon Schuster, together with Producer Andre Scholtz and Director Gray Hofmeyr have announced that principal photography on their latest top-secret cinematic outing, Schuks! Your Country Needs You, has wrapped.

A side-splitting candid camera comedy, Schuks! Your Country Needs You co-stars long-time Schuster collaborator Alfred ‘Shorty’ Ntombela, stage and screen comic Rob van Vuuren as well as newcomer Laré Birk and is due to hit cinemas nationwide on Friday 29 November 2013.

Returning to his hidden camera formula for the first time since the box-office smash-hit Schuks Tshabalala, Schuster is sure that Schuks! Your Country Needs You will resonate with the South African audiences. “I am especially excited to deliver some much-needed laughter to South African audiences,” he says. “We’re about as culturally diverse as a country can be, but we all share a common sense of humour – and if making people laugh means I need to get ‘klapped’ a few times, it’s worth it!” he says.

Gray Hofmeyr helms the production as Director and co-writer for this 8th Schuster film. “I am thrilled to be working with Leon and Andre again on Schuks! Your Country Needs You. Although audiences are familiar with the laugh-a-minute format of past prank-filled Schuster films, we can guarantee that this one has more, bigger and better pranks than we ever dared pull off before!”

Iconic South African Film Producer Andre Scholtz takes the helm of the production, having worked with Schuster on such legendary films as You Must Be Joking!, Panic Mechanic, Sweet ‘n Short and Oh Schuks…I’m Gatvol. Scholtz says that Schuks! Your Country Needs You sees Schuster returning to his roots as South Africa’s foremost prankster and funny-guy. “Families will be rolling in the aisles as Leon, Rob, Alfie and Lare (and their unsuspecting targets) find themselves in some challenging – and hilarious – situations,” he says.

Due for release on Friday 29 November 2013, Schuks Your Country Needs You will be distributed by The Walt Disney Company Africa under the Touchstone Pictures banner.

John Cleese

John Cleese

Best known for his idiosyncratic turns in Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers, John Cleese will once again bring his unique comedy perspective to audiences across South Africa. Cleese has done it all, and now it’s time for him to tell you about his jam-packed life. The show will be split into two halves. The first will be a conversation session hosted by local radio celebrity John Maytham from 567 CapeTalk, who will be chatting to John Cleese in more detail about life up to and including his Monty Python career. And, the second half will be John talking about Fawlty Towers, A Fish Called Wanda and other controversial and hilarious matters as well as answering questions from the audience.

Cleese has achieved a lot in his career, which started as a sketch writer for BBC Radio’s Dick Emery Show and then The Frost Report. After this stardom beckoned, and Monty Python was created, with Cleese co-writing and starring in four series and three films. He went on to achieve further great success as the neurotic hotel manager Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, which he co-wrote with his then wife Connie Booth. After huge UK success John went on to crack the USA with A Fish Called Wanda (which he wrote and starred in with Jamie Lee Curtis). The late 1990s saw the unstoppable Mr Cleese appear in the James Bond movie The World is not Enough and later Die Another Day. His latest film role was none other than the ‘The Guv’ in the popular South African film ‘Spud’. From writing to starring in plays, musicals, theatrical and comedy productions, to films and sitcoms,

If you didn’t manage to catch john Cleese last time, now’s your chance. For those who did… prepare to be entertained all over again with his hugely successful show ‘John Cleese Live’

Leon Schuster’s Mad Buddies takes in R4.5 million (Gross) in its opening weekend in SA

Leon Schuster’s latest box office release, Mad Buddies, has been well received by local audiences, taking in a staggering R4.5 million (Gross) in its opening weekend (Friday 22 June – Sunday 24 June).

The result makes Mad Buddies the biggest ever 3-day opening weekend for a Schuster film, beating the likes of Mr Bones 1 and 2, Mama Jack and 2010’s smash hit Schuk’s Tshalabala’s Survival Guide to South Africa over the Friday to Sunday opening weekend period.

Mad Buddies, the 14th outing from the legendary filmmaker, tells the story of sworn enemies, Boetie (Schuster) and Beast, played by Kenneth Nkosi (Jerusalema, Tsotsi, White Wedding), who are forced to embark on a road trip as unwitting subjects of a new TV reality show, devised by a gorgeous TV Producer, Kelsey, played by Tanit Phoenix (Spud,Straight Outta Benoni). On camera, with the whole of South Africa in on the joke, the pair comes unstuck at every stage of this hilarious journey until they discover that they have been conned and join forces to exact revenge.

Mad Buddies also stars long-time Schuster collaborator Alfred Ntombela as Mr Mda, the Minister of Tourism, is Directed by Gray Hofmeyr and Produced by Helena Spring. It is currently available in cinema’s nationwide.

We’re Never Going To Be (SA Idols). The song pokes fun at the competition

The Brothers Streep Launch New Idols Single

Sunday 5th June saw the launch of the new Brothers Streep single, We’re Never Going To Be (SA Idols). The song pokes fun at the competition, whilst referencing past and present Idols icons such as Gareth Cliff, Proverb, Randall Abrahams, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Unathi Msengana and Heinz Winkler.

The song came about after the Idols producers contacted the Brothers and asked them to write a song for the new season of Idols.

“We’d just got back from having written and performed a song for The Comics Choice Awards up in Joburg, and Idols called us saying they’d watched our song about Anna Paquin on the Graham Norton Show, and wanted to know if we’d write a song for them. Idols is probably one of South Africa’s biggest locally produced TV shows – it was a pretty easy call to make,” says singer and guitarist Simon van Wyk.

The single is currently available for free download off The Brothers Streep website, www.brothersstreep.com.

“We’re hoping that making the song available for free will make it easier for the song to get around. All we ask is for people who download the single to consider sharing the link with others and maybe even request their favourite radio station to play it – that would be nice,” says singer and guitarist Dylan Hichens. “The song laments ‘we’ll never have a single charting in the Top 40’ – we’re holding thumbs that lyric will become ironic.”

Idols and The Brothers Streep came up with quite a unique way to present the song.

“Idols asked us to perform the song live to the judges as if it were a real audition, so the judges didn’t really see it coming, and we didn’t really know exactly what to expect. Standing in front of someone and singing that they look like Voldemort isn’t necessarily the best way to make a good first impression on them,” says van Wyk.

“We realised that carting in full band equipment wasn’t going to be possible, so we decided we’d just blatantly mime the song and hope it adds to the comedy,” says Hichens. “Actual pop stars mime all the time, if anything, it was the most professional thing we could have done.”

A music video for the single is on the horizon, and the Brothers have already had further song writing requests, penning the soundtrack to an upcoming advert for Geely which you can look out for later this month.
